Life Coaching: The Proactive Guide

A life coach can help you navigate choices that life gives us every day, from the small to the great.

Guide clients to:
  • Identify and achieve goals in their personal and professional lives
  • Focus on what they really want and then develop a SMART plan (Specific, Measurable, Realistic, Assignable, Time appropriate) to identify their strengths and weaknesses
  • Eliminate what is not working in their life
  • Recognise and accept weaknesses
  • Organise & prioritise to achieve targets
  • Communicate effectively
  • Handle challenges and necessary changes to plans
  • Set goals so client feels in control & empowered to make the changes and feel fulfilled
  • Be assertive, confident and happy

The life coach takes an active role in helping the client. They use various techniques carefully and sensitively adapted to the client's needs. One of the main aims of life coaching is to teach the client valuable techniques to be self-reliant. The coach-client relationship should not be permanent or long term. The client should eventually become their own self-coach, capable of working through their own issues. They should eventually be able to make effective plans to appropriately change and organise their lives, adapting as needed, coping with external influences of change, staying as focused as external forces allow, and thriving through self-motivation.
One of the most useful techniques employed by the coach is to carefully listen to the client and then repeat and reflect back on the client's words. This ultimately allows the client to:
  • Monitor their own reactions to situations and events
  • Positively self-analyse and make proactive change
  • Clarify their feelings
  • Judge the suitable actions and changes needed
  • Make appropriate decisions based on their life setting — their culture, country, work and home life
  • Feel empowerment and self-belief
  • See a path to follow and the end goal in sights
